How Can the Teal Pumpkin Project Protect My Child’s Smile?

October has arrived, and if you’re like the estimated 73% of American families who celebrate Halloween, you and your loved ones may be eagerly awaiting October 31st. Whether you’re busy planning the perfect costume or excited to hand out goodies to trick-or-treaters, there are plenty of preparations to make for the big day.

But your child has a food allergy, you might not feel safe taking them door-to-door for snacks provided by strangers. If you’re feeling disappointed that they can’t participate, continue reading to learn more about the Teal Pumpkin Project and how it can help protect your child’s smile!

What is the Teal Pumpkin Project?

The Teal Pumpkin Project began in 2012 and was headed by the director of FACET, a Tennessee-based food allergy group. This organization recognizes that children with food allergies are unable to participate in many traditional Halloween festivities, like trick-or-treating, because they might have a dangerous or life-threatening reaction if they’re exposed to ingredients that trigger an inflammatory response in their systems. Meanwhile, other kids have cognitive, genetic, or physical challenges that prevent them from participating.

In an effort to include children with allergies or disabilities that hinder their enjoyment of the holiday, you can place a teal pumpkin outside of your door this year to let your friends, family, or neighbors know you’re handing out non-food items to avoid putting anyone’s health at risk.

Why Should I Participate in the Teal Pumpkin Project?

Handing out non-food items this Halloween can be beneficial in a few different ways. For instance, it allows children who might otherwise be required to remain at home to enjoy trick-or-treating alongside their friends who don’t have the same allergies or special needs.

However, it can also potentially protect and preserve your child’s dental health. Eating sugar attracts harmful bacteria that produce acids that can wear down your kid’s enamel. Unfortunately, this increases the risk that they’ll develop cavities, gum disease, or injuries which could otherwise have been avoided. That means handing out non-food items to reduce their candy consumption, and encouraging others to do the same, can help plenty of children avoid dental visits after Halloween.

What Non-Food Goodies Should I Hand Out?

Thankfully, there are plenty of things you can give away instead of sugar to help make the holiday special this year. For instance, you can hand out glow sticks to help watchful parents keep an eye on their little ones as the sun sets and the evening grows dark. You could also purchase stickers in bulk that can be placed on water bottles, notebooks, or backpacks, allowing kids to express their personal style.

These types of goodies are far less likely to trigger allergies and help kids with different abilities make the most of the season in addition to preserving their smiles!
