You might already know how hard it may be to get your child to do certain things. From picking up their toys to helping set the table, they might give you just a bit of pushback. This might also go for brushing and flossing, but it’s important they stick to these habits. Building a good routine now can set them up for a stronger smile in adulthood. A great way to encourage them is with some praise. Here’s how it can help.

How Can Praise Help My Child with Brushing?

The Society for Research in Child Development published a study where researchers wanted to see how words of affirmation can help three-year-olds with brushing. Parents would submit videos of nightly toothbrushing over 16 days. These recordings were then split between letting the kids do it themselves and audio of praise during and before the oral hygiene routine.

It was found that persistence in brushing varied day-to-day, but those who got positive feedback and instruction tended to stick with it for longer. Even generic phrases like “good job” and other instances were effective. That said, the authors state there may be some limitations, but there is evidence of praise helping encourage good dental habits.

So, What’s the Right Way to Praise My Child About Brushing?

With that said, there is a right way to give your child words of affirmation. These are a few tips you should keep in mind.

  • Be Sincere: Kids may be more perceptive than you think. They can tell whether you are genuine or not. Even if your loved one can brush more effectively, bring up the small things.
  • Find a Balance: Giving praise too often can lessen the impact, but it’s important to complement the same things to reinforce them. It’s a fine line, but watch how your child reacts to build a sense of when positive phrases are needed.
  • Don’t Forget About Other Aspects: While you might want to emphasize brushing, don’t forget about other parts of it, like remembering to do this habit in the first place or taking extra time to get their molars.

While you may already praise your loved one for other things, it doesn’t hurt to continue that energy for their smile. A little here and there can go a long way in ensuring their growing grin stays in great shape.
