4 Dental Problems Your Teen May Experience

Parenting isn’t an easy job. You may be doing your best to set your teen up for success, but things are constantly getting in the way. While school and extracurriculars might be trouble, their oral health can be as well! There are several dental problems they may be at risk for. By understanding common issues, you can be more prepared to help them. Here are four you should know.

Erupting Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are the last set to erupt. They typically do so in late teens to early 20s. For some people, they come in just fine, but this may not be the case for your loved one. These structures often become impacted or are at an angle. This can lead to discomfort and misalignment over time because of the pressure. By having a visit to their dentist, they can learn whether these third molars are going to be trouble.

Dental Injuries from Sports

If your teen plays sports, then ensure they follow all safety precautions. They are there for a reason, as they might be at risk of a facial blow. This can lead to chips, cracks, or even a knocked-out tooth. Remind them to wear their mouthguard; that way, they protect their smile from damage that may have occurred otherwise.

Stress & Certain Habits

Your teen’s schedule might be jam-packed with different things. They may have exams coming up and other social events, and they become stressed about juggling it all. Many people tend to grind and clench their teeth, but this habit can lead to increased enamel wear.

Not only that, but energy drinks can also be trouble. They are acidic and sugary, so they are double the trouble when it comes to cavities. Although it may be hard to steer them off of it, being there for them to vent and express frustration can be what they need.

Smoking

The teen years are oftentimes when people experiment with smoking. While you might not like the idea of your loved one doing this, it’s important to discuss nonetheless. Whether it’s tobacco, e-cigs, or vapes, their gums can become inflamed, increasing their risk of periodontal disease and oral cancer.

Having a judgement-free conversation to help them understand the dangers of this habit can be effective. That way, they understand the severity it has on their smile and keep it protected.
