3 Ways to Curb Your Child’s Halloween Sweet Tooth

With Halloween getting so close, there’s a good chance your kid(s) have developed a serious hankering for candy. Maybe they’re even demanding (and eating) sweets before the big day itself. Still, you’d do well to curb your child’s Halloween sweet tooth; overindulging it will hurt their smile. Your Castle Rock pediatric dentist has even stopped by to ensure this happens. To that end, here’s a primer on how to reduce your kids’ sweet tooth on (and around) Halloween.

(Halloween) Candy Harms Kids’ Grins

For context, remember that candy – Halloween-based or not – isn’t good for oral health. Having too much of it will damage kids’ smiles.

Candy is almost always packed with processed sugar, with few exceptions. The latter carb is well-known for attracting harmful bacteria that erode tooth enamel over time. Given this sugar-induced erosion, eating a lot of Halloween candy increases your child’s risk of cavities. That kind of decay can result in other complications later – toothaches, sensitive teeth, tooth infections, etc.

How to Curb a Child’s Halloween Sweet Tooth

To keep your children’s smiles safe this month, you should take several steps to manage their Halloween sweet tooth. These include the following:

Limit the Candies Your Kids Eat

While it might lead to temporary tantrums, one idea is to limit the candy your kids can eat. A solid example is to have your children trade some Halloween sweets for a non-candy prize. Another is to limit which houses your kiddos can visit for Trick-or-Treating. If those options don’t work, you could also restrict your little ones from certain types of candy; hard, sour, and sticky sweets are the kinds to watch for.

Feed Your Kids Filling Meals

To reduce sugar cravings on Halloween, feed your kids filling meals on the 31st.  They won’t desire sweets as much if they have a calorie-rich (and nutritionally balanced) breakfast, lunch, and dinner. After all, bodies only crave sugar because it’s a quick fuel source. Eating foods packed with protein, vitamins, and minerals will leave your kids sated, ensuring their cravings (if any) are weak.

Keep Non-Halloween Sweets Natural

It’d be wise to keep your kids’ non-Halloween sweets natural, especially when the 31st is only a day or so away. Your children’s palates will crave sugar less as they avoid unnecessary sources of this carb. Furthermore, your youngsters will appreciate natural sources of sweetness more. Halloween could roll by with your kids preferring an apple or carrots instead of oodles of candy.

Hopefully, the tricks above will help you curb your children’s Halloween sweet tooth. Your whole family can then enjoy the holiday without worrying about oral issues.
